12 Days Historical Tour Route By Surface

Historical Route by surface, 12 days This tour takes you to one of the most magnificent cultures and landscapes on Ethiopia’s Historic Route. In this fascinating part of Africa, the past comes alive in the form of strange and beautiful monuments and ruins, built centuries ago in what used to be one of the greatest kingdoms of the world.

Marvel at the spectacular 2,000-year-old stele at Axum, the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela built more than 800 years ago, the castles of Gondar, the island monasteries of Lake Tana, the magnificent Simien Mountains, the Great Blue Nile Falls, and last but not least, the friendly and charming people. This is truly a trip of a lifetime!

Day 1
Adddis Ababa

We will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel for check-in. The first day we spent in the fascinating capital of the country: Addis Ababa. Depending on your time of arrival we take you on a half day or full day city tour visiting some sites of your choice like the Ethnographic Museum, National Museum, Trinity Cathedral, Mercato (the largest market of Africa) or the Entoto Hills just outside Addis Ababa .

Day 2
Addis Ababa - Bahir Dar 553km /10.5hrs

After breakfast, continue north to Gondar.  The four-hour drive will take you through rural villages, offering wonderful insight into the Amhara culture.  After briefly settling in your hotel, explore the sites of Gondar, including a visit to the Royal Enclosure, with six castles and several other buildings.  Additionally, visit Fasilidas’s Pool, still used for Timket celebrations today, Ras Gimb Palace Museum and the Debre Birhan Selassie church, with the most famous ceiling in Ethiopia.Overnight (hotel).

Day 3
Bahir Dar

Early morning flight to Axum (07:45).  Upon arrival to Axum, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel.  Today will be a full day visiting the sites of Axum, including the famous obelisks (one that was recently erected after being returned from Italy) and the archaeological museum, the Queen of Sheba’s Bath (which supplies water to Axum year-round), Ezana's inscription, King Kaleb’s tomb, King Bazen’s tomb, and the Queen of Sheba’s Palace.  You can also visit the St. Mary of Zion church, where the Ark of the Covenant is kept.  Men only are allowed to enter the old church.  Unfortunately, no one (except one specially chosen guardian monk) is allowed to enter the chapel where the Ark is kept. Overnight (hotel).

Day 4
Bahir Dar - Gondar 174km / 3hrs

this morning is about one hour by boat to reach Zeghe Peninsula where we visit the most famous church Uhre Kidane Mehret. We enjoy a walk on the forested peninsula to the other churches and might meet monkeys and beautiful birds on the way. At the other side of the peninsula the boat is waiting and takes us to Kibran Gabriel Island (unfortunately women are not allowed). Before we are heading back to Bahir Dar the boat takes us to the the source of the Blue Nile where we find many water birds and maybe a hippo, meanwhile enjoying the sunset.

Day 5
Gondar - Simien Mountain

The Simien Mountains are the next place we visit. On the way from Gondar we encounter already spectacular scenery as a good preparation for this afternoon. After an early lunch we spent the afternoon to enjoy the natural beauty of the Simien Mountains. There are several opportunities to explore the park, on foot or by car. It is almost guaranteed you see the gelada baboon. We enjoy the sunset at our destination the Simien Lodge./camping sanakber

Day 6
Simien Mountain - Axum 274 km / 9hrs

In the morning, proceed to the airport for the return flight back to Addis Ababa (09:00).  After arrival, depart southern Ethiopia Hawassa.  On the way, you will stop at Lake Ziway to visit the vibrant bird life.  Overnight (hotel).

Day 7
Axum

in the morning after breakfast, visit the fish market on the shores of Lake Awassa and then proceed driving to Dorze, set in the highlands above Arba Minch.  The Dorze people are known for their tall beehive-like houses and their fine cotton weaving.  You will visit the village and learn about the daily lives of these industrious people.  If today is market day (in Dorze village on Monday and Thursday and in nearby Chencha on Tuesday and Saturday), that will be visited.  afterward continue to Arba Minch overnight ( hotel or lodge).

Day 8
Axum - Mekelle 250km / 5 -6 hrs

Today we continue our journey through breathtaking scenery of Tigray. On the way we first visit the Yeha Temple, the oldest structure found in Ethiopia. En route to Mekele a small detour leads us to the Abreha Atsheba church, one of the best excamples of the rock-hewn churches of Tigray. Instead of one of these places it is possible to visit Debre Damo, the monastery on the top of a cliff. Only accessible by a 15 meter long rope and unfortunately for men only. (it is possible to add additional days to explore more of Tigray)

Day 9
Mekelle - Lalibella 335 km / 7hrs

this morning after breakfast depart Mekelle, this day is long but beautiful drive takes us to the highlight of your visit to Ethiopia: Lalibela. If the day goes smoothly we might have time to visit Yemrehane Kristos church en route.

In the morning, take a day trip to Omorate to visit the Dassenech tribe.  Here you will cross the Omo River by local boat and enter a Dassenech village.  Afterwards, return to Turmi have lunch then drive continue Jinka .this day if there is market will visit afterward drive continue jinka overnight. (Hotel / Lodge). Market place ;- Dimeka , Alduba and Keyafer market.

Day 11
Lalibella - Kombolcha 334 km / 7-8hrs

In the morning, drive through the Mago National Park to a local village of the Mursi tribe.  The Mursi are known for their lower lip and earlobe plates.  In the afternoon, after returning to Jinka, you can visit the South Omo Museum & Research Center to learn more about the local tribes.  Alternatively, take a hike in the surrounding hills to visit a local Ari village.  Overnight ( Hotel or Lodge).

Day 12
Kombolcha - Addis Ababa 378 km / 8hrs

The last day of your unforgettable visit to Ethiopia brings us back to Addis Ababa. A hotel room for day-use is available. We say goodbye to dear friends with a visit to a cultural restaurant, enjoying the great Ethiopian food together with traditional music and dance from all over this fascinating country. After diner we take you to the airport for your flight back home.
